Witty Word – Polisi Tidur

POLISI TIDUR

Polisi tidur refers to a traffic bump in the road.  Traffic bumps (also known as “speed bumps” or “traffic humps”) are typically located on streets where people would like traffic to slow down.  For example, traffic bumps are common near school crossings and in suburban housing areas.  Wikipedia’s description of traffic bumps can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_bump .

In Indonesian, “polisi” means “policeman” and “tidur” means “sleep,” so together “polisi tidur” means “sleeping policeman,” which makes for a clever commentary on perceptions of police and/or a cute play on words related to traffic.
