Witty Word – Different Words for Rice

Indonesians have multiple words for “rice.”  Unlike American English, Bahasa Indonesia has separate words that encompass adjectives for the different stages of rice.  Examples follow below.

 

PADI –> rice on the stalk/stem in the field

GABAH –> unhusked rice grains

BERAS –> uncooked rice that is bought at markets

NASI –> cooked rice
