Poem – “Baris Dance”

November 9, 2011 Poetry Travel & Living Abroad 0

By Ahmad Shiddiqi

a dance of war

strongly masculine

display a strong sensitivity

in the myriad of moods and expressions

a sacral dance

performed usually dressed warriors

with distinctive triangular

white headdresses

bearing weapons such as

spears, spiked shields or swords

they dance in line

posing aggressively

before attacking each other

in simulated battles
